Set to go on sale this summer, the 2011 Ford Edge gets a number of significant improvements that add up to more than the usual nip-and-tuck job commonly found in such mid-lifecycle refreshes.
Those changes begin under the hood, where buyers will be able to choose from three engines. Topping that list is a new turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost inline-4. While that engine won't be available until the end of this year, Ford claims that it should return 15 percent higher fuel-efficiency than the current 3.5-liter V6; that pencils out to around 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. The Edge's two new V6 engines include a heavily reworked version of the current 3.5-liter V6 that puts out 285 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque, and a version of the Mustang's 3.7-liter V6 rated at 305 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque.
The 2011 Ford Edge's new styling features a prominent new grille that echoes design cues from the midsize Fusion sedan. Wheel choices include 18- and 20-inch alloys, though the new Sport model is said to roll on huge 22-inchers. Ford also promises that a revised suspension will provide a more engaging driving experience. Upgraded brake hardware should also help reduce the current model's relatively poor stopping distances.
Inside, the 2011 Ford Edge gets an all-new interior with classier styling, better-quality materials and more soundproofing for a quieter ride. Also featured will be Ford's new MyFord Touch information and entertainment control system, which uses reconfigurable screens in the gauge cluster and a big touchscreen in the center console. These are operated by two five-way controllers mounted on the spokes of the steering wheel.
We've yet to drive the 2011 Ford Edge, but this midsize crossover is certainly going to be more competitive in this crowded category. Check back later for a full review.
